Why did a Brit object to his daughter learning to sing 'O,Tannenbaum' in her German cl?

Perhaps he was struck by the tune, commonly ociated with words about how "we'll keep the red flag flying". Alternatively, he may have objected to the whole idea of singing in praise of a tree, which is an utterly pagan concept. I'm not too happy about it myself.
