What are some nice places in Africa to visit?

I am thinking of going to Africa in the future. I know that most of the continent is in poverty right now. I would like to know, what would be some very nice rich areas to go to. That would be completely safe and a lot like the U.S. A friend of mine went and said it isn't as bad as what they show on TV or what you read in the paper. You would have to go see for yourself. Do you know any good areas? I am use to places like NYC, LA, ATL, and MIAMI. Someone told me that Johannesburgh was a good area. Please help....DON'T BOTHER TO COMMENT IF YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO AFRICA.
