From what I've read in Wikipedia, the Procter & Gamble company officially based Mr. Clean's image on a US Navy sailor. His tanned muscles and spotless white shirt might suggest that. However, the fact that in the commercials he seems to instantly appear whenever he's needed, wears a big gold earing, crosses his arms, and performs magic tricks to make dirt disappear (i.e. the "Magic Eraser") makes me highly skeptical of this claim.
