Why do we still have an electoral college (is it just because of tradition).?

if my math is correct it has allowed the president with less votes to win a little over 7% of the time; 93% is still pretty good, but why not elect the more popular president 100% of the time. i personally believe that eliminating the electoral college would encourage more people to vote.
